Sometimes I think we are all striving for ultimate perfection in everything we do and everything we are.
But is that really our ultimate goal? Should it in even be our ultimate goal?
I recently came across the art of Wabi Sabi.
Wabi sabi is a Japanese design concept. It means beauty in that which is temporary or imperfect. Things that come off of an assembly line, for example, are perfect, but things made by hand, like the glaze on a Japanese ceramic bowl, are imperfect. It is their imperfections that give them their beauty.
The same is true for people. It is the combination of all of our imperfections that make us vulnerable and beautiful.
I love the idea of wabi sabi as a metaphor for our lives. We need to consider that life is a journey. We are all working to become better versions of ourselves. The idea of a “work in progress” is a concept we need to consider for this journey.
When we undertake some self-scrutiny, we will see that we are imperfect. But what we can also reflect on is that these imperfections are what make us unique. It is these imperfections that make us both human and beautiful.
